Bel Nada: Brewing Success from International Roots
Rebecca Coombe and Katie Louise, co-founders of the alcohol-free drinks start-up Bel Nada, bring a unique blend of experiences from their international schooling at Ecolint, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to sustainability into their brand. Bel Nada sells an alcohol-free gin and an Italian apéritif, with all products made in Switzerland, inspired by alpine botanicals. The seeds of their business journey find their roots in their formative years at La Châtaigneraie, where their friendship blossomed amid a diverse cultural backdrop. Ecolint provided not just an education, but a profound understanding of different perspectives, an openness to diverse cultures and a friendship of 20 years that proved essential in starting a company.
Like many graduates, they left Switzerland after the International Baccalaureate in 2012. Rebecca delved into culinary arts, exploring hospitality and gastronomy, while Katie ventured into marketing and law, building a robust foundation that would later complement their joint venture.
The idea for Bel Nada germinated during their convergence in Switzerland when the pandemic started in 2020, a serendipitous reunion that birthed a unique concept. Both alumnae were at different stages in their personal lives and came from countries where the alcohol-free market was booming. Frustrated at the lack of offers for alcohol-free drinks in Switzerland, they decided to take the matter into their own hands. The shift to an entrepreneur life is significant and comes with its challenges but the duo is deeply passionate about the benefits of mindful drinking and they see a real opportunity in the market.
As Ecolint alumni, their commitment to sustainability is intrinsic to the brand's identity. Rooted in their reverence for the Swiss environment, Bel Nada aims not only to deliver exceptional taste but also to promote environmental consciousness, emphasizing the beauty of the Swiss nature in their product and practices. When deciding how best to launch an alcohol-free company in Switzerland, the team moved away from the idea of importing the best brands from abroad to become a reseller. They didn’t want a business with such a large carbon footprint, so instead chose to develop products from scratch. Their goal is to offer delicious alternatives to alcohol that leave no trace on the environment or the body.
Throughout their journey, mentorship has played a pivotal role. Leveraging the guidance from their Ecolint network, comprising both classmates and parents of classmates, experienced industry professionals, they have navigated the entrepreneurial terrain. The nurturing environment and connections cultivated during their academic years have continued to provide support and guidance and the duo spoke to current students at La Châtaigneraie at the beginning of the academic year.
Bel Nada, with its origins in friendship, education, and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, represents more than just a beverage. It's a symbol of innovation, culture, and an ode to the diverse experiences that shape our paths.
