Enrolment at its nadir: Ecolint’s Secondary and Middle School students assembled on the steps of the Grand Bâtiment for this photo in 1942, when World War II had reached its bleakest depths. Although Nazi and Fascist supremacy seemed at that point like a fait accompli – many in Europe were resigned to a “new world order” – and Geneva (which was geographically too vulnerable for Switzerland to defend realistically) could have been taken over by German troops from one day to the next, Ecolint persisted valiantly in pursuing its educational mission, maintaining a compassionate, humanitarian haven and fostering a sense of normality for its students, notwithstanding the enormous challenges to its survival.
