Student in climate sciences - University of Bern

Suisse

Ecolint gave me a strong sense of curiosity, collaboration and a global perspective, whilst naturally encouraging leadership!

Where are you studying now, and what course have you chosen and why?

After graduating with a BEng in Environmental Engineering from the University of Nottingham in July 2025, I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Climate Sciences at the University of Bern, whilst also regularly taking courses at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Sciences at ETH Zürich. I chose this programme because I have always been curious about atmospheric science, meteorology and climate variability, and how understanding these systems can provide solutions to climate challenges. Combining scientific principles with practical solutions is something I enjoy, particularly in such a dynamic and interdisciplinary field!

What’s a highlight of your university experience so far academically or socially?

One of the biggest highlights has been the freedom that comes with university life - from choosing modules that interest me to learning in a less rigid environment than before (a refreshing change after having to stick with a few IB subjects that weren’t exactly ‘thrilling!’). Working closely in groups, especially during our major Environmental Engineering design project, was both technically challenging and very rewarding. Collaborating, communicating and playing to each other’s strengths made the process enjoyable and meaningful! Every now and then, you might be tempted to skip a lecture (though you’ll regret it a few days before the exam!), and moments like these make university life memorable.

What are you hoping to achieve or explore during your time at university?

Now that I am in my Master’s, I want to fully enjoy the experience whilst choosing courses that truly align with my interests, goals and long-term aspirations. I am particularly excited to deepen my understanding of meteorology, atmospheric systems and their impacts on society, especially in the context of emerging climate risks and extremes! I also hope to build on my Environmental Engineering background by applying it to scientific and climate-related applications. Outside academics, I am also taking the opportunity to learn Swiss German whenever I can!

What advice would you give to students at Ecolint who will soon be heading off to university?

Be open to new experiences and don’t hesitate to reach out to others - and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! This might mean choosing a challenging course, exploring a new subject, or simply asking for help when you need it. Ecolint prepares us extremely well, often more than we realise, and gives us the confidence to succeed! Stepping outside the “Ecolint bubble” can feel new at first, but it’s also exciting, rewarding and full of opportunity. Try to enjoy the experience and not stress too much, as everyone is learning as they go!

Have any experiences or lessons from Ecolint helped you settle in or succeed at uni

Ecolint gave me a strong sense of curiosity, collaboration and a global perspective, whilst naturally encouraging leadership! Skills that I developed through projects, presentations and assessments such as the IB Internal Assessments; even if it is challenging (and a little annoying at the time!) - gave me a real advantage at university! Organisation, communication and research skills have been invaluable for navigating university life, helping me feel confident, adaptable and comfortable working with people across the University!
